DESCRIPTION:This is a two-day event delivered by the British Library aimed at people looking to start a business. \nDelivered by the Reference Team at the British Library. \nIntellectual property and its protection is vital for anyone with a business idea. This all-day workshop will help you understand the multiple areas of intellectual property and their relevance to your business\, as well as provide you with practical tips on how to utilise the BIPC’s resources to protect\, research and develop your business idea. By the end of the session you will understand and identify the importance of intellectual property in your own business and know the next steps to protect it. \n‘Business Research and Information’ (AM) will cover: \n• The fundamentals of using the BIPC’s and your library’s resources to develop a strategic roadmap for your business \n• Introduction to databases\, industry guides\, external resources list\, internet and library resources \n• Value Proposition: trend\, values\, sustainability\, wider issues \n• Customer Segmentation: market research and customer discovery and understanding \n• Partnership: company data and competitors \n• Key Resources: research my IP and funding streams \n• Help you make informed business decisions\, plan and offer value to your customer \n‘How to Protect my Business Idea’ (PM) will cover: \n• Introduce the four areas of intellectual property (IP) – patents\, trademarks\, registered designs and copyright \n• Help you understand which areas may apply to you and your business \n• Examples of everyday IP in our lives \n• A deeper dive into IP: time limits\, registered or unregistered and other practical examples \nAbout your facilitators \nGail Mitchell is a Business & IP Specialist at the Business & IP Centre (BIPC) at the British Library. Gail has worked for the BIPC for many years\, helping customers with their research and reference\, as well as delivering workshops\, one-to-one advice clinics and project work to businesses related to the services and resources held in the Business & IP Centre. \nJulie Boadilla is a Business & IP Specialist at the Business & IP Centre (BIPC) at the British Library. The topics discussed will include marketing\, sales and finance\, providing you with a start-up survival kit. By the end of the session\, you will have the skills\, knowledge and confidence to complete a one-page business plan. \nThe workshop will cover: \n• How to register a business \n• The basics of financing a start-up and understanding cash flow \n• Legal and tax obligations \n• Work Life Balance \n• How to test if your business idea is viable \n• Knowing your customer and your competitors \n• Legal structures and how to choose one \n• Financing and revenue models \n• Policies and procedures \n• Compliance obligations \n• Legal and tax obligations \n• Business licenses\, permits and insurance \nAbout your facilitators \nMarta Zukowska is an experienced facilitator with over 20 years’ experience in delivering leadership development courses for start-up\, trade-up and scale-up businesses. She delivers 1-2-1 business support across Haringey and Barnet\, and facilitates the delivery of a range of other business support programmes across London. \nDwain Reid is a business consultant with over 15 years’ experience delivering workshops\, mentoring and coaching people from across the UK. His mentees have appeared on Dragons Den and he has supported others to secure investment.
