This all-day workshop will help you understand the multiple areas of intellectual property and their relevance to your business\, as well as provide you with practical tips on how to utilise the BIPC’s resources to protect\, research and develop your business idea. By the end of the session you will understand and identify the importance of intellectual property in your own business and know the next steps to protect it. \n‘Business Research and Information’ (AM) will cover: \n• The fundamentals of using the BIPC’s and your library’s resources to develop a strategic roadmap for your business \n• Introduction to databases\, industry guides\, external resources list\, internet and library resources \n• Value Proposition: trend\, values\, sustainability\, wider issues \n• Customer Segmentation: market research and customer discovery and understanding \n• Partnership: company data and competitors \n• Key Resources: research my IP and funding streams \n• Help you make informed business decisions\, plan and offer value to your customer \n‘How to Protect my Business Idea’ (PM) will cover: \n• Introduce the four areas of intellectual property (IP) – patents\, trademarks\, registered designs and copyright \n• Help you understand which areas may apply to you and your business \n• Examples of everyday IP in our lives \n• A deeper dive into IP: time limits\, registered or unregistered and other practical examples \nAbout your facilitators \nGail Mitchell is a Business & IP Specialist at the Business & IP Centre (BIPC) at the British Library. We’ll begin by discussing the importance of infographics and the key elements of effective design. \nYou’ll then create a wireframe for your infographic\, either by sketching on paper or using apps like Canva or PowerPoint. This hands-on activity will guide you in outlining your business services\, identifying key points\, and selecting appropriate icons and visuals from available templates. \nWe’ll wrap up with a Q&A session where you can get expert advice and learn about additional resources to further develop your infographic. Also\, Alasdair Wilson\, General Manager from Bromley Old Town Hall\, plus Start Up Bromley who will share how local businesses can be supported. \nYou will also meet other local small business owners\, hear updates from FSB London and Bromley Council about the support available\, and swap business cards over lunch. In addition\, a chance to join a short tour of the venue once home to the old Council Chambers\, old Courthouse and cells from the the Magistrates’ Court days – all repurposed to support the business community. \nFSB member and volunteer – Chandra Sharma of Elmcroft Business Services and FSB Bromley Borough Action Group Lead will be hosting this event.
